What Being An Art Installation Curator Means To Me

For me, being an Art Installation Curator means thinking about that Installation often, every day in fact. There are a variety of different aspects of that, a main one obviously is having items on display, and the item above is such an item.

My ‘Redbanks RUST & FOUND Art Installation’, in the Adelaide Plains Region of South Australia, is made up of found objects, so I’m always on the look out for items to put out On display, and that lovely battered and rusty Screwdriver is the latest item, and I was certainly thrilled to find it!

I was walking along the road this Art Installation is on, which is also where I live, and a slight deviation from my path brought me to this delightul tool! I quickly grabbed it, then took it along with me as my husband and I and our dog Lenny continued our walk.

it’s been a while since I’ve found an item of note, such as this one, and so when our walk was over, I happily and quickly examined possible options for a good display spot. And then I placed it out, as shown in the photo just there.

This Art Installation is home to a good few such tools, found by myself as I walk around various places. I’m not particularly looking for potential such display items, but am always open to the possibility of finding them!

Life’s like that, I feel – remaining open to good things that may happen, makes it more likely they will in fact happen. If I hadn’t taken that slight sidetrack today, this Screwdriver would have remained in the undergrowth, becoming ever rustier until it finally became a scattered collection of rusty scraps of nothing much at all.

As the Curator of this Installation, a major role is definitely the collection of such material. And the putting these items is of course an important part. Another not so readily recognised part, is bearing in mind possible ways to bring attention of potential visitors to what is on display. This aspect is an ongoing learning experience for me, and I’m glad to have this website where my various Business related interests are ‘out there’ on show!

There are over 700 items on display – tools, horseshoes, old chains, and a varied collection of other items, in various shapes and sizes. They’re found, then eventually put on display, for visitors to view.

I’m keen now though to bring an exciting new aspect of this Art Installation to the fore, and that is as a Tourist site. In the Adelaide Plains Region, agriculture has always been the most important business.

These days though, with ever increasing numbers of residents with no working relationship with agriculture, but only that of being a consumer of such products, there is much more of a focus on other ways to bring interest and so money into our region. My desire is to assist in increasing visitor numbers to the northern Adelaide Plains Region, to the betterment of all of us here!

Being Normal Doesn’t Feel Like Me, And I’m Happy About That!

The idea od being judged as ‘normal’ is of no interest to me, I don’t ever want to be ‘normal’ it feels so limiting! I’m a Word Nerd (a term I’ve only recently come across, and I know willingly embrace it! Words are the thing that draws all of the best things in my life togerther.

From reading and especially writing, to talking, and performing, and of course thinking, Words are what floats my boat! I love new words and ways to say things, I love intellingent conversation, listening to clever radio is my idea of the perfect driving companion, some of the time anyway.

Lots of people I know, ad those I don’t know (yet), might say the same, but I suspect I might take all of that in more unusual directions at times, that many others wouldn’t envision ever doing themselves.

The most obvious one is probably the Art Installation I Created, and am now Curating (a work in progress, and I’n expecting lots more actuon will be coming along on that one later on this year. And of course my desire to do work as a Stand Up Comedian is probably not what the average 60+ year old wants to take up doing …

But I have plans at foot, and hope to have a lot of fun doing this one for sure. The idea of performing as my persona of Nanna Carreau fills me with happiness! I offer humble thanks to Martin Christmas for his assistance with getthing the idea of this persona up and running!

This occasion was in Mallala, when there was an afternoon of classic cars when one of the roads was closed and the cars were there for people to see and learn about. So, with encouragement from someone I know, I dressed up and Nanna Carreau and had fun, and gave some of those in the crowd a bit of a giggle too!

Taking opportunities is something I’ve learnt to grasp with both hands, and am enjoying where some of it takes me! Soon, there may be something happening for me in the Barossa, if things pan out well for me, and if they don’t there will be other times, in other places!

Having books, and doing things with, and in libraries, that seems to be quite a good thing to do! And given the fact that I like talking to others, and I have books and thoughts, and a somewhat interesting life, well I think so anyway, I should be taking about it to others!

And who knows there may be book sales to come of doing that! Book sales and author talks, as well as doing writing related workshops are all classic ways for writers all around the world to earn money.

I’m a writer, and I know about these things. I’m just not that good (yet) at the marketing side of things. I’m working on that though, and I hope by the end of this year, I’ll be much better at it!

I’ve had a life, and I’m still having one, a different one in new ways, and I’m loving it! Not everyne would say the same, and I’m sad for those people. Perhaps a session with Nanna Carreau would cheer them up, and make them laugh!

Moving Forward, Slow & Sure!

I know what I want to do, and I know many of the people who can help me as I go. Having goals is one thing, but with action, a goal is just a decoration, amounting to not a lot that is very useful in terms of ‘doing business’.

The goals I’ve set for this year though, ones developed after reading a recent Journaling topic given by Nan Berrett on the Facebook page ‘Your Journaling Journey’ will be guide posts to assist me as I go through the necessary steps to make my business the best it can be!

The ten ideas I came up with in response to this prompt topic cover a variety of things, some of them concerning my business others more personal things, but it all blends into creative things for 2025!

This Journaling Journey has brought up many interesting thoughts and ideas, and I definitely want to continue with journaling once this 30 day program is all over.

This is part of our gate, which forms a part of the Redbanks RUST & FOUND Art Installation, which is going to be one part of the business I am going to start up early this year, if all goes as I want it to! I’m excited about this new direction I’ll be going, it feels like I’m finally doing what what my life has been leading me to!

So slow and steady wins the race, and I have my eye on the prize, which is to have a respected business doing a variety of creativity-connected activities that will bring in a reasonable profit for me (eventually).

This year is for setting it all up, next year though, let that be the year it takes off in good ways!

I’ve made some money from my writing over the years, but now, with many more things to do, I ‘m expecting more! An I nervous about starting a new business at my age? No! I’m almost 62 and that is the perfect age to do this!

So I’ m not nervous, I’m excited. Bring it on, I’m ready to make it all happen! Many thanks to the people who’ve been helping to get to this position, especially my Support Worker, Tereza, and my husband Graham! You are both great, and have helped me to be great too, or more than that, I am Awesome!

On Curating An Art Installation

The Redbanks RUST & FOUND Art Installation was home to another event today, with a reasonable crowd present, to look carefully what was there, and then move to another venue nearby to write about what they’d seen.

The metal creature on the left hand side hadn’t actually been on display this time, and while the metal chicken was veiwable, she was no longer in such a prominent position. As it turned out though, Chikkie Chook still attracted quite a bit of attention, with several creative writing pieces created on the day mentioning her!

I get the feeling the Anthology being published related to this particular event will do well to include that funny chicken creature in it! I may do a photo shoot with her, to gather a variety of photos to choos from for the front cover of the book!

The putting on of events, and creating promotional material as well as written material, regarding the Artwork itself are all parts of the role of being an Art Installation Curator, a role I have gladly taken on, after the completion of the Creation of this particular installation.

I may not have known what I was doing at the beginning, but given the remarks from today’s event, I seem to have produced a worthy Art Installation, one that may become an item of interest for Arts minded visitors to the region.

I have other plans regarding the point, and certainly while this particular Arts Installation is personal to me, there are other Arts venues of interest too, one very close in fact, and I can see a role for myself in the future as a promoter of interest regarding both of these, plus other Arts venues in this immediate area.

It may be that most Arts Installationists don’t have ‘cleaning up of bird poop’ in their list of regular tasks to perform, but this one is certainly one I undertake at least a little bit every week. Clearing out of water from rectacles is another big one for me, another perhaps unusual one in the realm of Art Installation curation …

This Art Installation is an open air one, consisting of a gate and fence, as well as a nearby section of the property where the Installation is sited. So, open air means both the birds and rain, and so the poop and collected water, all need to be dealt with, if not on a daily basis, then at the very least weekly.

I’m not at all cross about having to do such tasks, walking the length of this Installation, and getting ‘up close and personal’ with the various pieces and sections of it, mean I’m getting an even better feel and understanding of what there is, and how it may be better displayed.

And as an added bonus, the walking required is good for both body and mind! And of course connecting with interested others is good for the soul too, so yes, being an Arts Installationist is something I’m very much enjoying doing!
