Do Writers Need to be Good at Waiting?

When you’re writer, there are many times you might have to wait. You wait for the Muse to visit, you wait to find the time to write, you wait to hear back for feedback, you wait to hear whether your submission was accepted.

Then if your work is accepted, you wait for the publisher to do their bits and pieces, until the book is printed. Then it may be that waiting stops, and you are in full-mode marketing of your book, or maybe not. Either way, a part of you will be waiting to get back to your next writing project.

Every star has a story!

And then, when you actually get back to that next project, the wait for your Muse, and the ideas, and then the feedback, etc, etc, comes again. This could be tedious, but if you’re a clever writer, you have a secret weapon. And that secret weapon is that you never actually stop thinking about writing! Yay to that!

Well, actually, calm down a bit … It’s probably a good idea, rather than always be thinking about writing, actually living a life worth writing about, could be the best thing ever. If you can do that, you will be living such a good life, that there is no room for anything tedious. And how do you manage to live that good life?

Living a life, gathering ideas, getting ready to write!

Do the things that interest you, amuse or enthrall you, that confuse you, intrigue you, irritate or bemuse you. Live a life that brings puzzles to be solved, reasons to be bold, challenges, triumphs, but losses too, so that you understand the points of view of everyone who may ever be found in something you might write about.

Books, whether fiction or non fiction, work best if there are winners and losers, heroes and villians, loves lost, loves found. These things make the world of your writing go around, living, and breathing, and above all, worth writing and definitely worth reading!

Well, have you ever thought about why you write? If you have, but don’t know the answer, that’s fine. If you haven’t, because you think the answer doesn’t matter, that’s fine too. The reality of it is that most writers write because it’s the thing that brings them the most joy, than means the most to them, that is the thing that makes them feel like they’re doing the thing that matters the most to them.

If you’re one of those people who writes, a writer, then everything you do is really a gathering of more material, to use when you can next get your words written down, so there isn’t really any ‘waiting’ as such, you just need to be good at using time in the best way you can, to add the most to your writing.

The time in between shouldn’t be considered useless waiting time, but useful gathering time, living your best life, thinking about it, and putting what you have gathered into what you are currently writing. And if you aren’t actually writing anything, are you sure about that? Maybe there’s a spot at the back of your mind that’s busily putting X and Y together, and coming up with story Z!

Getting story Z written should be you most important thing, you know that, don’t you? Your mind had done the work behind the scenes, but you need to drag it from the back of your mind, into the forefront of your mind, so you can look at what you have, and write that story, book, poem, article, whatever your next thing is.

So make the time, give that next writing thing what it deserves, your attention. Whether you work full time, part time, or not at all, but have this or that, in other commitments, realise what you most need to do to do the best you can for yourself, and give yourself time to write. Don’t wait for the time, make the time. It’s your life, and you are a writer, so don’t wait for the best time, the best time is right now, so write!

Feedback and Ideas Requested

I’m a teensy bit excited about this project I’m currently working on to be honest, and I hope lots of others will be excited about it too. The range of works that can go in an anthology, means that both serious things, and silly things can go in there. Could I or should I use an image like the one below, as the front cover of this anthology? (Comments welcome on this question)

An anthology is: A published collection of poems or other pieces of writing. (https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/oi/authority.20110803095416186)

So poems, fiction, non fiction, stories, articles, songs, all and any of these can make their way into an anthology. And the works that get published in the anthology I’m working on can be deadly serious, or ridiculously funny, sensible or silly. It will depend on what is submitted for possible publication, and what meets the needs of the editor (Carolyn Cordon).

The editor has been thinking about this, quite a lot these past few days, since the “Plague Invasion” Anthology began to become a possible reality. Thoughts and ideas have flown in, and out, been tweaked and twitched, and at the moment, these are relevant details for those interested in submitting work for this anthology.

Plague Invasion Anthology

Up to three poems, or 1,500 words prose, fiction or non fiction.
For prose, up to three pieces, up to that 1,500 limit as above.
All accepted writers can buy one copy of Plague Invasion at cost price * this point may be changed to ‘All accepted writers will receive on copy of Plague Invasion for free (plus p&h)’
Further copies for accepted writers will be available at half retail price.
All prices are plus p&h.
If I end up going mad, or broke doing this, it was probably still worth it.

That final point was a bit of silliness, I am feeling confident that I can do this, and my sanity will remain intact, as much as it ever is … Haha, humour in times of challenges is a fine thing, if we can find things to laugh about, life seems to flow better, much, much better.

Did someone mention toilet paper?

I would really appreciate knowing what you think about any of this, Good, bad or indifferent, I need the feedback to keep going, and going in the best directions, thank you!

Call for Creative Writing Submissions

I am a poet and writer, but I am also an editor too. Obviously, if poets and writers are going to present their best work/words, they will need to edit their work, before they ever show it to other people, whether friends, family, or writing buddies. And they will have to do an even more intense job of editing their work before they present it to a publisher, if they want to make the grade, and get their work published.

I have done these things, and have been published, and still receive royalties for my work, many years after publication … So with all of my experience with books, and also as the Editor of the Mallala Crossroad Chronicle, a monthly newsletter that is distributed in Mallala and beyond, as well as being available at the Facebook page. This newsletter has been going for fifteen years, and I have been the sole editor for most of those years. It is a popular item and well received indeed.

I have also been the President of Adelaide Plains Poets from it’s beginnings, it is a great group, a writing group that meets every week. The Adelaide Plains Poets also has an annual Poetry competition, and a Festival of Books too. These popular avenues assist in bringing the love of words to many others, both local, and all around Australia.

So there are my credentials regarding creative writing. The reason I want to make this clear, is that I want people to feel confident in sending me their own creative words, to be involved in being published in an Anthology. I have put together poetry collections of my own, and have also had my own creative words published in other Anthologies with other editors. So I know a bit about both collections and anthologies.

my most recent poetry collection

And if I’m going to put my attention, and my money, into putting together a Creative Writing Anthology, I want it to be something that is likely to attract attention, both of writers initially, and of book readers, once it is published. And what is the thing that is taking up the attention, and time of us all at the moment? It’s the coronavirus, or Covid-19.

The working title of this book at the moment is “Plague Invasion”. Does this get your mind working, thinking about possible ideas? A poem about being in Lock Down, and finding it so dreary you turn to creating a vegetable garden? Or an article on the same topic, perhaps. Or you may think about the work being done to keep us all safe, and the craziness of wearing face masks, whether they’re needed or not.

The uncertainty of the whole thing, and the stupid risks being taken by some levels of society, could become an article or a flash fiction story perhaps, of one of the risk takers, whether an eighteen year old person sitting closely together with their mates, or a more mature person just back from their most recent cruise, and infecting others and bringing about the closing down of some small towns.

All of these topics would be suitable, and more. You may have knowledge of all of this from a medical viewpoint, or perhaps you have knowledge of previous plagues from the past. These would be suitable too. I will be looking for as many different ideas, and viewpoints as possible. And as an avid dog lover, I would be very interested in having a look at all of this Locked Down situation from a pet’s point of view.

The memes I’ve seen about this indicate dogs loving having their humans present more often, while cats very much dislike it. What do you think? Write about it and send it in! Anything you have that may fit into this theme, that’s what I want you to send to me.

So, if you have something, please get it to me before 31 July 2020, by sending it as an attachment, to kittycordo@gmail.com, using the subject of ‘submission, Plague Invasion’
If you would like to know more about this, feel free to send me a query, at the same email address, with the subject of ‘query Plague Invasion’.

I imagine there will be around 70 to 80 pages in this anthology, it would be wonderful if it got to 150 or so pages, the answer to the size of the book depends on how many responses are received.

I look forward to reading your response.

Cozy Mystery, inspiration

Committing to Your Writing Project – One

Today, I will write more of my novel, a cosy murder mystery featuring the amateur investigator Meredith Webster. I will add at least 500 more words to the first novel in the series today, and will try very hard to do the same every day, until it is all finished in first draft form, then I will have selected others read it, give me feedback, with a view to getting it published.

So, that is my stated commitment, and it is up to me, to get it done, not anyone else, just me. Of course, if other people are a=watching me, and avidly waiting to read this novel, in first draft format, and will be glad to give me feedback, that will be a good encouragement. And while I already have several people lined up for this role, getting feedback on this blog would be awesome to have too!

I’ve never written a full novel before, I have written a lengthy novella though, and I have several published poetry collections, a school reader, and three amusing books about a dog named Buster. I have read many cost murder mysteries, and enjoy them immensely when they are well done. I’ve got characters, a setting, and many ideas about the town and some of the possibilities for murder there, with potential book titles.

Talloola looks a bit like this town …

I am ready for this, all I need to do is to get the first book written. Simple? No, not really. I am letting myself get too distracted by too many other, non-novel things. So that’s why I’m putting the word up here, where others can read it,and I hope give me a nudge if I don’t report back regularly with an ever increasing word count!

At the moment, the word count is at 6,249 words, so by the time I go to bed tonight, there must be at least 6,749 words. If I get more words written than that, that will be great, but I won’t allow myself to count those extra words for the next day, I will work on writing another 500 words, every day, with maybe a day off, every now and then.

So if you are a writer, and have a particular writing project that you really want to get done, then committing to it, planning it and actually writing it is important. Life at the moment for us all, I think is different, many are in lock in mode, because of the Covid 19 virus. And this means we have far more time at home than is usual. So without making light of the real deaths that have happened, it is a time we can use to work on that writing project, and find something good, amongst the bad.

So, that is what I will do, ‘Meredith’ and I will work on “Winds of Death At Talloola”, finding out who the killer is, and getting them jailed for their crimes! I look forward to you all helping me! I aim to check back every week with a new and much bigger word count. Are you going to be on the team to help me get this done? Leave a comment if you are, and it will happen!

Op Shop Inspirations

I’m heading off to my local Op Shop today, in Mallala, coffee, cake and Op Shop, all in one, allied with one of the local churches … What stories will I find there, I wonder?

Each item of clothing has a story, they’ve been around, travelled, to who knows which places? Today I’m wearing a combination of clothes, some Op Shop treasures, others new. I tend to buy new underwear, but outerwear often comes from an Op Shop, and I love each piece!

I tend to stick to one palette of colour, the Autumn range, so when I look for clothes, I tend to concentrate only on those warm green colours, as well as burnt orange, mellow yellow, cream, and so on. Red is on option, too, but a sombre red, rather than super bright one. Dusky pink is one that goes with these colours too.

I’m excited about this little trip, meeting up with a friend, and even if I buy no new clothes, I will find much to inspire me, simply by being out in my community! There is inspiration in so many things in life, and I try to make the most of every opportunity I have, to be inspired!

This lovely dress, $79.00, marked down to $39.00, never worn. Now could have been bought as part of a full bag for $5

What was the story about this dress, I wonder … bought for an event that never happened, or hoping for a drop in size, that wasn’t reached? Who can ever know? Not me, but I can imagine the story, be inspired by the ‘could have beens’. Every item of clothing at an Op Shop has its own story, for sure!

***********************

So the Op Shop visit is over, and we weren’t in time to get a coffee and cake there. Instead, when Sharon and I had snaffled our bag of beautiful things, a bag full, for each of us, and only $5!, we headed off to the Mallala Hotel for our coffee. We asked if there was any cake available (there wasn’t) instead, our coffee was served with an Allens Snakes Alive snake, clever work there – Troy from the hotel!

And this is my great haul of clothes! I have no idea where I’m going to put all of these clothes … Some of the things already in my wardrobe and drawers, may have to go … I’m very happy with the various possibilities there, in this range of new things, and all for the tiny price of $5 for the bag full!

I think there are 12 different items here. a scarfe, a pair of pants, and lots of tops.

I saw the ‘Corona Beer’ T-Shirt, and bought it, as a sick joke, really. Boy, the stories that could be told about the related, corona virus …

I’m very happy, as I said, with this haul of clothes. The pants may or may not fit, and if they don’t fit, it doesn’t matter, I’m more than happy to take them back to the Op Shop later, and I’ll still be totally satisfied with what I got! Lots of tops, all in colours that go together well! And there are chances to go wild with the mixing and matching, with tops, over leggings, or tone it all down with a black cardigan type bought at a previous Op Shop adventure somewhere else …

I’ve been to quite a few different Op Shops in my time, and don’t remember which clothes have come from which shops … So many clothes, so few dollars paid!

Happiness can come, as inspiration can too, from adventures with a friend. Thank you Sharon for this great time! We’re going to do it again some time, perhaps when there will be more winter clothes, jumpers and snuggly jackets …
