It All Starts Tomorrow

Today is the penultimate day of January, and I can almost say that tomorrow will be the first day of February, and that means it’s also the first day of February, and the first day of the month of creative writing prompts! I’ve been talking with members of my writing group about this, and the blog posts I’ve written about it, are on my Facebook page, and being read by some people.

I’ve put some links on my twitter accounts, and who knows how many people may have seen the information there. I’d like hundreds of people to be reading this blog post, obviously, but life isn’t like that – you have to work hard to get stuff like that happening in your life.

And my life is full of lots of different things, and I don’t have the time or the knowledge, understanding, or inclination to get all of those kinds of things done. In my ideal life, I’ll have a p/a, who will attend to the details, and I’ll be able to concentrate on the big picture stuff only. I’m not living that ideal life though.

Puss in Boots and I hape we all have a great creative month together, for February, with lots and lots of words written!

So I do what I can, what I want to do, what interests me the most, and what ‘floats my boat’. I get a huge kick out of inspiring other people to write, when they never realised creative writing was a skill they had. Giving feedback and encouragement taught me these things, and I’m grateful to the people who helled me in these ways. This February writing prompt idea is a way of giving to others.

Giving to others, helping them to write better, inspiring them to write, as a writer, of course I want others to write too, they’re my peers, and writers, are also readers, and of course writers and readers have a symbiotic relationship, giving to each other …

So the month of February will be a month of exploring ideas, writing on the new prompts I’ll be handing out, a new one every single day … And I’ve just today discovered that Writers’ Week starts in Adelaide, on the last day of this project, and that seems so appropriate to me, a month of new writing, ending with a great writing and listening and learning, as well as chat and schmoozing event, that brings together writers and readers from around the world, all getting together in the that little grassed space …

I’ll be there, for some of the event, not sure how many days, but at least two days, hopefully more. Writers Week always feels like I’m ‘one of the gang’ the gang of writers, sharing with others, and learning more and more about this writing world …

So this month of writing prompts starts tomorrow, the fun starts tomorrow (I hope!), and with luck, by the end of February, I may have enough poems for my next poetry collection! Or I may have a breakthrough and really truly get to work on my series of Cosy Murder Mysteries, or I may even turn the first draft of the novel I’ve written into the second draft, and have begun giving it to readers to make it into a publishable book, perhaps! You never know what might happen, when inspiration is in the room!

So I hope you’re feeling inspired for February to bring good writing, as I am, buckle in and be preapared to write and write and write!

From Small Things …

I’m quite excited about what the month of February might bring – a little work for me, in the posting of a new creative writing prompt on this blog, every single day of this month of February, as well as the birthday of my super dooper bestest ever best friend, also known as my husband, Graham.

I hope that by the end of the month, I, and anyone who wants to come along for the ride, will have at least 29 new pieces of creative writing, that one hopes, might go on to become something more than just the small thing it began as. From a single writing prompt, may come an entire novel! Or, as in my case, the improvement of a poetry collection, that goes on to be published!

If you’re reading this post, and are excited about what may happen for you, for this month, I’d love to hear about it, please feel free to leave a comment, and we may begin a worthwhile discussion about writing related things – hopes for our writing, ideas about how to improve what we write, anything. We are writers, and we write – may our words bring worth to us, and to all who read our words!

I have dreams, I have ideas. If anyone reading this blog is interested, I love to give workshops to small groups, especially those who aren’t really sure about the scribbles they do, when they feel the need to get the stuff in their brain out, and onto the page. This writing can be rubbish, at times, but it can also be wonderful.

Sometimes you can match the rubbish up with something else, give it bit of a polish, and it can become something far larger than the individual parts! Dare to dream, dare to write, dare to be your most fabulous self! And remember to tell people I helped you! Haha.

An image I took recently, when there were so many very important things going on, that I knew I had to capture images of, but I felt impelled to take a photograph of the ground at my feet, and in that image, are so many individual things. Stones, pebbles, sticks, leaves, sand, dirt, and who knows what else. There’s the toe of my foot, and part of the chair I was sitting on, and a tiny piece of the pants I was wearing …

Is it, could it be, inspirational, who knows, but right know, at this very moment, I’ve begun thinking about the series of Cosy Murder Mystery books I’m thinking of creating, and maybe this image could have been taken by my amateur sleuth, Meredith, and it turns out to contain a vital clue to the question of ‘Who done it?’

Inspiration, what a lovely word it is. If I can inspire more loveliness in February, how awesome that could be, would be, should be! I ask of all to help the awesomeness manifest, for the month of February! Let this blog be inspiration for a more awesome world, filled with the awesome creative writing from February!

Write For What’s Right!

I am a writer, I write for a number of reasons, but I’m thinking right now, I can use my writing skills for assisting good things to happen. Not good things for me, but for my community, my country, and for the world!

I am the editor of a monthly newsletter, that goes out to my local community, and beyond. I have hundreds of people who read that newsletter, the Mallala Crossroad Chronicle. As editor, I have complete control over what gets printed and distributed, and I feel like this avenue is a fine one to assist me in helping good things happen.

I often slip in little items of interest, random thoughts and ideas, so from now on, some of these items may begin to get a lot more serious. The country is burning, and my passion for doing what I can to help is also burning. We all can do something to help, whether by growing trees with Trees for Life, getting involved with a community group that helps other people in various ways, or something else that truly speaks to you.

I’m looking for the good in all, in the hope others will want me to see it in them too! That’s my take on life, especially right now, thinking about the way our country is burning, people, property, animals, habitat, dying … But there are wonderful people doing wonderful things, both big things and small, and in this way, Australia can keep on going, doing the best we can.

As a writer, I will use my way with words for good, sharing good being done, finding good within myself, and in others, sharing the good news, and spreading hope and help however I can. I suggest that I’m not the only person out there, there are many writers with a much wider audience than I have, and I welcome anyone in this position top do whatever they can do too!

If you have a voice in the community, use it to speak good things, spread good news stories, engender hope, and together we can be forces for good!

Responding to a Writing Challenge

I have recently put together a new book of poems, all responses to breaking my ankle recently. I’ve written about this new book, titled “Angles on Ankles” both on this blog, and also on this one & this one as well. The book is going to be launched very soon, by a poet friend, John Malone, who is also a blogger, who posts regularly on his own blog, and sometimes comments on mine.

So when John suggested to me that now that my ankle is getting better and better, I could perhaps write poems about the good news, as I formerly wrote about the bad news. So, I thought, nah. Then I thought, well why the heck not? If I can write some poems about the good news regarding my ankle, that might indeed be a good thing.

So, having written that, I can now reveal that I have indeed written a good news  poem about my steadily improving ankle. And I’m thinking about other ideas for more possible poems I could write, celebrating the good news about my Right Ankle!

And because I believe a poem without an audience is a sad thing, here is my first good news poem about my ankle:

On the Road to a Resolution

The way is winding, like the bandages

formerly wrapped around my lower leg,

holding together the good work done.

Bandages gone now, medical procedures

completed, recovery now my task,

not someone else’s … Can I do it?

So far, yes, actually. I’m exercising

daily – physio and others, as diligently

as those former procedures were done.

Early days yet – these things, bones

healing, body and mind confidence

emerging, slowly, but surely, I hope …

Are balance and strength increasing?

I hope so, yes – falling over isn’t on my

New Year’s Eve list of things to do!

So, the first of my new poems about my Right Ankle, is now revealed, is it a good poem? Who really knows. I hope writing this one makes it easier to write more, and if I can get some thoughts and feedback, who knows which direction/s my further poems might travel?

Therapeutic creative writing is definitely a favoured genre of mine, as and when needed, and it was definitely needed with my ankle, it helped to keep my mind active, when I had to just sit, and not put any weight on my right foot. Writing is a way to find out what the brain is thinking, when we’re not paying attention to it!

So if you have anything to say about this, please leave a message, I’d love to chat here with you about it!

Road Trip Inspirations?

Today I’m heading north/west, to visit a friend. I will be driving, my car is ready for it, and I’m nearly all packed ready. I’m not taking any electronic device for writing, except for my phone, but I am taking a notebook with me to write down anything I see that inspires words …

I don’t know if any words might lead to anything, but I hope they might, and it will be good to look back later to see what I thought was important enough to write down. I’m a stay at home kind of person, so this visit to stay with a friend is a new thing for me. I hope and expect it to go well …

Surely if you begin your travels with an upbeat expectation, it’s better than expecting doom and gloom, right? I hope so. The roads can be dangerous, I realise that, but I am a careful driver, and am practiced in driving on National Highway One, I’ve done it many times.

So, nearly packed, I’ll top up with fuel soon, then by lunchtime, I’ll be on my way, Hooray! It’s good to have things to look forward too, and I’m sure looking forward to this! Maybe I’ll find some plot ideas for my Cosy Mystery series, with Meredith, my main character going on a road trip herself, finding and then solving a murder or two!

So I’ll be taking pen, notebook, Meredith (my main character who is in my head), and expectations of a fun and word-filled little holiday with my friend, who is a writer too. Poetry may happen, good food will happen tonight (already planned what I’d like to order), and lengthy chats will happen too, with a friend I’d love to be able to see far more often.

Puss in Boots is coming with me too, I hope he enjoys himself!
