Writing Opportunities

It has been suggested to me by a friend that ‘now’ would be a great time for me to get stuck into my writing, and get plenty written.

‘Now’ relates to the fact that I am at home, unable to easily get out and about, because I have fractured my right ankle. The friend obviously meant well, and wasn’t being nasty at all, in any way.

However, I suspect this friend has probably never fractured a bone (or two). I have been home from hospital for the operation to ‘fix’ my fractured ankle, for less than a week, and I have written a few creative words, (a poem and some blog things), but the thought of writing anything much at all, couldn’t be further from my mind.

Merely getting around my house is enough of a challenge for me. I can’t walk, I have to use a kind of super scooter called a Knee Walker to get from here to there and back again.

So getting stuck back into my proposed series of Cozy Mystery books isn’t appealing to me at all, to write about. I do have a better knowledge of what it’s like to be in hospital though, and I certainly had a thought while I was in hospital, that the Town my series was set in should have a hospital, for sure.

I didn’t get any further than that though, although, I’m excited that my writing group will be at my place for our next meeting, and who know, I may write about my main character at the Talloola Hospital, investigating a crime!

So yes, Time can be an important factor in having the opportunity to write, but you also need the inspiration, and the inclination to write too. Time alone won’t make a novel happen. I often get quite inspired by our group’s writing prompts, so who knows? Maybe something will appear at the meeting on Thursday! 20191004_140748

My New Cozy Mystery Series – Some Bits & Pieces

“Being the oldest biddy in a town of old biddies isn’t easy but she’s doing it with grace and good humour!” This is Gert, who is one of the characters in my current major writing work in progress, which will be a series of ‘Cozy Mystery’ books set in the town of Talloola.

I’m working on creating books with gentle murders and small town politics, as well as a bit of footy talk, and there will be dogs, some anyway, who may be useful to my amateur sleuth, Meredith.

I’m excited about the idea of writing these books, and have a lot of planning underway already, just a few days after thinking up this idea …
This series of books feels like what I’ve been building up towards writing, for many years. There have been some sideways steps, that could have been failed attempts at writing in other genres, but were in fact learning exercises, and helped me to realise what I really wanted to write!

I have a main character I want to be good friends with, a maybe love interest I’m a bit in love with myself (I’m far too old for him though and of course I’m married my main character, Meredith, isn’t though …), there’s dear old Gert, and a nasty (and possibly corrupt) mayor who tests every boundary there is, and always gets away with it. And there’s the trans hairdresser, Steph, at her business “Hair It Is” who hears many things in her little hairdresser shop (and who may have some hidden knowledge about the Mayor’s life from before he ever came to Talloola, and there are many, many more interesting Talloola-ites.

Meredith has a big love of dogs, and dogs always love here, it’s almost as though they can read each other’s minds … (or maybe they can read each other’s minds, in some weird way).
I’m loving writing this, so far I have titles for more than ten books, and have begun my writing, with more that 5000 words written of the first book, which will be the second book in the series. I also have a few hundred words of the first book in the series written, and some notes for other titles.
I’m excited about this, did I mention that?!

Pollock, a Poetic Form

This poetic form is one I hadn’t ever heard of before this year. A blogger I know, Paul, has written about the ‘Pollock’, which is a poem based on, in fact consisting of, a quote by the famous American artist, Jackson Pollock. There are rules and things, and rather than describe them I offer this link to Paul’s Poetry Playground, where the original blog post is, describing this form of poetry.

It’s well worth exploring Paul’s great blog, he has many interesting poetry related posts there, with all kinds of poetry related things for you to enjoy!

I read the blog post earlier this year, read Paul’s own ‘Pollock’ poem, but didn’t think any further about it. Then I saw another poet’s attempt at this odd style, and it piqued my interest, so I have now had a go at it myself.

I decided to find a different quote, and so called on Google to assist, as I often do. I don’t know how I feel about the poem I created, in response to this challenge, and though I haven’t read my poem aloud (yet), I suspect it will work better as a performance piece, than it may as a written poem.

Here it is, for you to read, have a look – I’d love to know what you think about it!

It’s Just a Pollock

Technique is just a means of arriving at a statement.

A technique, a statement, just arriving …

A just statement, a means of arriving.

A statement arriving, a means of technique.

Arriving at a statement, just.

Technique means, a statement arriving.

A just means, arriving …

A just means of arriving at a statement.

Statement, technique, just …

A statement just is …

At, just means a statement is arriving.

Just means.

Just.

‘Arriving at’, means just is – a statement!

Themes in a Writing Life

I have been ‘a writer’ for perhaps twenty years. Over my time as a writer, I have written about a variety of different things. I tend to write about what my mind is connecting with, at the time, and I think about many things.

An early theme was Sexual Abuse, which resulted in both a poetry collection, and a blog. Another theme has been Dogs, and that has so far resulted in three books with at least one more book in the same series to be published perhaps next year. Since I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2010, I have published a book about it, and again, have a blog regarding that theme.

My current theme, one I have also begun a new blog about, is living a Stoic life. I began thinking about stoicism around two years ago, and I based much of my early thought around a book I received for my birthday last year (or it may have been a Christmas present). It is the book “How to be a Stoic” by Massimo Pigliucci, a well written book and very informative.

I am enjoying looking at my life, and considering it in regards to Stoicism. I wrote a blog post on my Stoic blog this morning, which shows this, I would love you to go there and read it, it tells a bit about me and how I live my life!

Being a writer means you have to have things to write about, and living a life made up of many different things means the range of your writing can be a diverse one. And exploring different genre means you have more options and avenues for your words. I am a writer, as I have said, and I write different things.

I am currently working on an adult novel, I have an idea for a Young Adult novella, I am a poet, I am a blogger, and I’ve written short stories too. I also have a memoir, which was the book mentioned previously, about multiple sclerosis. I am also the editor of a newsletter for the people living in the town closest to where I live, Mallala. This newsletter comes out monthly, and I enjoy putting it together, with my own writing, and the articles sent to me for it.

My life is one of writing, and also of working with and for my various communities. It is a good, simple, and Stoic life, and I love it!
