Writer Creates New Word

I am a writer, and that means I am a person who writes. I write blog posts, poetry, articles and books, and of course I write on social media, because, well doesn’t everybody, these days? Yes we do, happily, excessively, dedicatedly, and in many other ways too.

Being a writer who wishes to have their words read, you have to get involved with the wider world, at least sometimes. But many, or at least some writers, can create a brand new word, that ventures out into the world, and becomes ‘just the wanted and needed word’ for particular times, persons or situations. Certainly Shakespeare had great a great aptitude for doing this and a great many common words and phrases are there because of that great wordsmith.

Over the years, I’ve come up with one or two myself, but I never did anything much with them and that have faded away, and now, I can’t even remember what they were … But I’ve come up with a new word today, and I love it so much, I’m going to do all I can to get this word the admiration and use it deserves. It’s a fine word, and is perfect for a particular kind of person. I know a few people like this and I’m sure many, many other people know or know of some of them too!

This new word come to me in response to some thoughts I’ve had about the word ‘philosopher’ and how some people may use that term to describe themselves, because they consider themselves to be deep thinkers, whether or not they’ve had any actual training in the complex subject of philosophy. These people may expound loudly and at length on the subject of themselves, and expect others to be in awe at their wisdom.

But of course philosophy is more than just that. This is a good explanation of what it is, from people who certainly know a lot  about the subject. “… philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other.” This is from this site https://philosophy.fsu.edu/undergraduate-study/why-philosophy/What-is-Philosophy, which can lead you to more on the subject, if you are interested.

My new word though, won’t be in that website, which is a learned one, my word is in fact decidedly not a learned word. It is a word that describes those fake philosophers, the ones who simply talk of themselves, as I wrote earlier, the ones who are full of their own self importance, and I call them not a philosopher, but a “phullofhimselfer”. What do you think of the word? Pretty clever, right? I think it is, but I don’t want to get too full of my own cleverness! Every now and then, I do something smart, but I know it doesn’t always go that way, and I can be a bit slow on the uptake sometimes too!

Anyway, that’s my new word, please feel free to remember where you first saw it, and where it was!

Getting a Picture Book Published

I’m sure I’m not the only person who has a picture book skulking around in their head, waiting for the best moment to emerge and so be released out into the world, right? I have this idea that seemed like a great picture book, but it was rejected by a publisher and it has been sitting in a drawer ever since.

I have another potential book for children in my head, in the early stages, but I haven’t really done much about getting it thought through, and have spent no time in thinking on how and where it may ever be published.

If this sounds familiar to you, you can probably understand how excited I am about the workshop I’m going to be involved with later this month. The Gawler Poets at the Pub event takes place at the P/A Hotel in Gawler South Australia, on the last Sunday of every month. The main event is the Poetry Reading and open mic in the afternoon, and there is often a workshop in the morning.

For November, there is a workshop, and it is all about making your idea for a picture book or other genre, absolutely the best it can be, and then getting it published. I am one of the presenters, the other is the writer of a beautiful new picture book that is just out. Her book will be there for attendees to look at and be amazed by, and I will have copies of my own books there too.

This workshop will cover various modes and methods of making a book beautiful, and then getting that beautiful book published. There are more methods for these things than you may realise, so if you’re in the area, why not come along! I’d love to see you there, and if you’d like to know more, feel free to contact me via email at kittycordo@gmail.com

Writers Do More Than Write Books

Yes I am a writer, and have written seven books so far, with a few others planned for the future, but I, and many other writers write many things other than simply books. One of my writing roles I am the most proud of, is being the Editor of the Mallala Crossroad Chronicle. This is a monthly newsletter, which has been going since around 2005, back when I had a ‘proper’ job.

I was the ‘Mallala and Dublin Towns Coordinator’ at the time, working for the Mallala Economic Development Board, part-time, in the Mallala Council Office. It was a new role, and the duties were many and varied. There was much involvement with various community related things in both Mallala and Dublin.

I had taken the job over from someone else, which is never an ideal situation, but I tried to do the best I could, at that job, and apart from waking up and worrying in the middle of the night, almost every night, for the two years I was doing the job, I enjoyed it!

The secretary of the MEDB and I went to a community builders workshop while I was there, and we had to look at a community project we could do, and we decided creating a new workshop for the town of Mallala would be a good thing, so we worked on getting that started.

I left that job, after my time was up, and I couldn’t find more funding for the role, and the other person moved on to other things, but I kept going with the Chronicle. I am very proud of that newsletter, the way it has grown, more and more people in business are happy to pay to advertise in it. When the Chronicle began, it was two A4 pages, printed back and front, so four pages of printing. The most recent issue is I think 23 pages of printing, and it brings in a tidy some of money, when the advertising payments come in.

The writing group I’m involved with, as foundation member and President, is the auspicing body for the Chronicle, which means the writing group gets the advertising money, which is a very handy amount for a small volunteer group, which runs a few different things – a monthly poetry reading, an annual and national poetry competition, and an annual Festival of Words. I am proud of all of these things, and of the fine people from the writing group who work on them with me!

As the Editor of the Chronicle, it is my role to source material from various people – community groups, politicians, the local doctor’s office, local council people, and really, anyone with interesting things the people of Mallala might find interesting. The newsletter is created in colour, and is available online in that presentation, but the copies that are printed are in black and white, because colour is too expensive.

I feel like the mother of this newsletter, and even after over ten years, I still get a kick out of someone telling me they enjoyed reading it, and I still get a bit of a thrill from being the creator of every new issue! I collected and delivered the October Mallala Crossroad Chronicle today, and even though I managed to get a paper cut from the newsletters I delivered to the Post Office, that bled and bled and bled after, I still love the Chronicle!

Creative Writing Exercise 2

Sometimes a writer can spend so much time looking for what to write about, they forget to actually look at what is going on around them. There are battles, love stories, deaths, births, commitments, going on in the world, between people, creatures, in Nature, in your yard, where you work, where you play, everywhere.

If you write romance, for instance, have you ever caught a shy glance shared between work colleagues? That man serving at your usual cafe, does he always have a particular smile for one particular regular customer? These simple things can bring interest to your writing, real things happening in places you know so well, you can write about them so the reader can almost hear the phones ring in the office, or smell the coffee at the cafe.

image00000095

When you bring such things into your writing, you will be able to easily use the five senses, because you know what these things look like, sound like, smell like, taste like, and feel like, because they are a part of your life. The things you do almost every day, or especially every day, will become second nature to you, and you will be able to bring everything into how they fit into your writing, because the things are normal, natural, and also special, to you.

The way your front door key sticks if you are in a bad mood, so that getting inside after a bad day at work, making your mood even worse, or the way the same door can open with a fairy soft key twist after a great day at work, where you were praised for a job well done. These things can add much. So can the wind as it blows through the trees, sounding like perhaps the sea, or the way next door’s chickens sometimes sound so proud of themselves, it sounds like they’ve produce a dozen golden eggs, not just one ordinary brown or white one.

Everything that happens can, with adjustments, go into your current writing. Or if it is interesting, but doesn’t seem to fit with your current work in progress, write it into a  for such things. Sometimes when you have a moment later on, with the same work or a different one, your note may be just the perfect thing to show something, something true, and perfect.

Real life brings reality to your fiction writing, to your poetry, and even to non fiction writing. Even unicorns can get nervous when a thunderstorm hits, flinching at crashing thunder, flashes of lightning, wildly thrown head with rapidly twitching ears, damp skin, shivering, cowering, trying to hiding away somewhere small and safe.

Write what you know, with the exciting addition of what you imagine, as well!

My First Poetry Collection

I wrote my first poem that gained acclaim back when I was in my early years of High School I don’t actually remember which year it was, but I was around thirteen I think. It was History class, and we had to do a project on a particular historical place. I don’t remember which place it was, but it was in Europe, in the olden days, and I’m almost certain it started with the letter ‘C’. It may have been Carthage. It may have been somewhere else entirely.

And when I say ‘gained acclaim’, I mean my mother liked the poem and I suspect I got a good mark for the project, enough to impress my mum. Anyway, the important thing is that I learned that poems can impress people, if they are good enough. I didn’t immediately start penning more poetry to attract the interest of others, because life especially when you’re at school, and then work, life takes over many creative aspirations, giving way to financial ones.

But I did get back into writing poetry, particularly after I quit work, and became a ‘stay-at-home mum’. Being stuck at home with this new creature in my life meant I was home, with not much to do beyond caring for this new baby, as well as the dogs we had. It was a whole new world, as I quickly realised having a human baby was not the same as having puppies. Some of the processes are similar, but the care and love is so much deeper when there is your child involved.

I’d gone from being a worker, five days a week, travelling with my husband from our home in a rural area, to the office job in the city of Adelaide, our state’s capital. In the early times of being a mother, I had no car, and I have to say, I felt lonely, even with that baby present 24/7. There was some post natal depression happening, and I was certainly not feeling like a person who was capable of doing anything that deserved public acclaim.

To find some sense of worth, I eventually began a TAFE course – the Advanced Diploma of Professional Writing. I enjoyed this, going out at night to classes, where there was no child depending on me for everything, and I could talk about writing in its many forms, rather than talking about nappy changes … It was a blissful ‘grown up’ thing to do, finally.

I never finished that TAFE course, but I had begun doing many more interesting things relating to writing, in particular poetry. I didn’t feel I needed more information, although, in retrospect, I could have been wrong to thing I was fine. I’m OK with that idea though, and will just do my best to keep on taking up learning opportunities as they come along.

Anyway, back to my first poetry collection. This collection, titled “damage children, Precious Gems”, deals with extremely personal things in my life. I was sexually abused as a child, and then teen, and probably, as an adult too. Being a woman, sexual abuse is always a possibility. I used the writing of this poetry collection as a form of informal therapy, and am glad I have found an audience of people who have also been or still are, victims of sexual abuse. I set up a blog with the same title as this poetry collection, where I look at abuse, in particular sexual abuse, and many things related to it.

It sounds like a gruesome thing, I know, but my collection follows a line from terrible, to good, or even excellent. I was a victim, but I am now thriving in my life. Being able to say that means much to me. I am happily married, have a child who is a fine person, and my life is a good one. Not bad, for a person who went through abuse from a person who was supposed to be ‘a friend of the family’.

The writing of this poetry collection has been a healing thing, a therapeutic thing, and I firmly believe in the idea of therapeutic writing. It can happen in an informal way, as in my case, initially, or it can happen in a more formal way, but however it is, it can be a  healing thing, for sure. I have a strong interest in this form of writing.

Being able to find myself in this position is a wonderful thing, a liberating thing, and I hope my words in this first collection can help many more people who are living troubled lives because of abuse. Nobody deserves this, no-one ever. If you are struggling with abuse in your life, I urge you to seek assistance from those who can help. Your doctor, trusted person, authorities, whoever, there are many people whose task it is to help people …

There are many organisations here who can help, please go to these people if you need them. Nobody deserves to live in fear of abuse, and anyone who has been abused deserves to get help when they need it.
