New Book Launched, Now For The Next Steps!

OK, so yesterday, as part of the monthly Gawler Poets at the Pub event, my new poetry collection, “Leonard Cohen Is Dead” was launched, in the presence of a keen group of friends and fellow poets! I sold some copies of this book, and probably made enough money to have paid for the cost of buying them from the publisher, Ginninderra Press, at the author rate.

I enjoyed the day, from the excellent workshop held (more about that later), to the lunch, and the book launch – not too long, not too short, but just right!, and then the poetry reading to follow, with me as the guest poet! How exciting!

Reading of the poem that this collection is named for went extremely well, and I could feel the strength and passion in my voice as I read the poem to those present. This poem is an excellent one, that shows how I feel about this great man, Leonard Cohen, sadly no longer with us.

Passion and poetry go together well, and the reading of a poem with no connection or care is a pallid version of the words, and should never be done, in my opinion. If you couldn’t care less about what you are reading out to others, why bother even reading it? Whether you like the words or not, the listener should be able to understand your feelings about it, by your presentation!

Anyway, back to that workshop … The “(Developing) A Sense of Place” workshop was attended by a keen group, and we all wrote notes, and then put together our words in poetic form. I certainly got right into this subject, and I feel got to what the presenter, Alex Robertson, was working to convey to those present.

In the end, I actually wrote three new poems during the day, such was the ‘creativity’ I was feeling there!
These are my brand new poems, three different styles, all inspired by the doings of a lovely day in a lovely hotel, in a lovely town. I love Gawler, and the Prince Albert Hotel, and I love my writing group members and others who are involved too!

Go Gawler!

Bordered on western side,
where two rivers join, then flow seaward
as Gawler’s built heritage merges
with new shopping centres
on three sides, with train line
connecting country cousin’s dormitory
of a laid back existence
compared to Adelaide’s brash
rush and hurry city-style.
Which identity wins, when
train line connects the two again,
in the confluence of commuter’s
different lives – home, to work
and back again, I wonder …

Those two rivers flow
Near where I play with words, then
join, & rush to sea.

(A five word challenge)
Gazing over plain’s horizons
Envious perhaps of hills’ cool,
And greener haunts,
But truth is, as a passenger
On this Earth,
These flatter places, where
Galahs swoop and squawk
Are my kind of place …
My three poems written on the day

This was an excellent day’s entertainment, for those who love words, writing, especially writing poetry! With the five word challenge, five words are chosen at random from the Guest Poets writing, then those present are involved to write something creative, using those five words, or versions of those words. They have ten minutes to write, then one by one, each has their chance to read their new piece of creative writing to others present. Then the winner is chosen by the Guest Poet, and the winner is given a bottle of wine, kindly donated by the lovely people at the Prince Albert Hotel!

So this event happens every month, and the good thing is, the guest presenter/poet is paid for the gig. It’s not a lot of money, but it’s an easy and stress-free gig, to a large extent, and is a great way to go for a newbie on this scene, with more of a being with friends feel to the whole thing. But we are all getting better and better at doing this, and so really, anyone there, may be the one who most attracts the attention of the guest, and wine that bottle of booze!

For the final part of the day, the Poetry Reading, poets are give a few minutes to read their own words, whether brought with them, or written in the workshop section earlier. And gosh, the quality of the words read just keeps on getting better and better! Because there is such a friendly ‘country’ feel to the day, most people enjoy themselves, and we hope will continue to join us.

This event was actually begun 27 years ago by the poet, Martin Johnson, who was in fact the person who launched my book for me. And not long after this event had begun, I first met Martin for my first ever public poetry reading, so it all felt perfect for me yesterday, like a joining up the ends to make a circle of my poetry life!

Poetry brings me joy in so many ways!

My New Book Being Launched Soon!

I am thrilled to announce my next, and possibly best, poetry collection ‘Leonard Cohen Is Dead’, will be launched on Sunday 29 May 2022.

This is event will be part of the Gawler Poets at the Pub event, which takes place on the final Sunday of every month, at the historic Prince Albert Hotel in Gawler, at 1.30pm. The actual launch will be done by Martin Johnson who is a well known Gawler local, and I’m happy he agreed to launch this new book for me!

I love book launches, whether those of other writers, but especially my own! A new book may mean new readers of my words, and what poet doesn’t like that, no matter what kind of book they write, poetry, prose, fiction or non-fiction.

This event will begin with a writing workshop, then after lunch my new book, a poetry collection titled ‘Leonard Cohen Is Dead’ will be launched! And after that is done, I am going to be the Guest Poet for the Poetry Reading!

Fun Times!

What I’m Working On Today …

I’m a writer, which means I write. But a writer, if they want to improve their art.craft, also must live, and learn, about life in the broadest of senses, and also in the most miniature and closely observed sense. They can then bring those closely observed tropes and treasures to the writers’ writing.

So to that end, today, as I’ve been editing the first draft of a poem written yesterday, in the hope of this second draft perhaps being included in my next poetry collection, I’ve been listening to the the Labor Party’s Better Future talks, with many fine words spoken, knowing these speeches were written by fine writers.

I hope such inspiring things may rub off on me, and I may insert such passion into my words. That poem I’m working on, will, I hope be included in the poetry collection I’ve been working on, in an off and on manner, as I created the poetry collection I will be having launched at the end of this month, on 29 May, the collection titled ‘Leonard Cohen Is Dead’, that will be a full sized collection.

The poem I’m working on today, will be in a much smaller collection, a chap book with a ‘clever’ title which I’ll talk about another time, and it contains some interesting poems, about things that interest me. choosing to write about things that interest me, means I can write with more passion, and interest, I hope.

I don’t write about things that are ho hum to me personally, because I can’t feign passion, where there is none. Passion comes from within, when we look deeper into our minds, and follow the lines of ideas, to considerations, to results …

And as I’ve been listening to our probable next PM, I have finished the second draft of that poem, which has the working title of ‘Meanings In Puddles’, and having read it, I feel needs another edit, and then, after draft number three, may become something special. I hope so anyway!

Another thing I’m working on today, is the relationship I have with our new dog, Lenny. He is an adult greyhound, and while I want to love him dearly, the two of us aren’t there yet. So I will be taking Lenny for a walk quite soon, perhaps driving somewhere, to get to the place we’ll be having our walk, because it seems Lenny prefers being driven, over actually walking particularly far …

As a racing greyhound, and the necessary training to be good (which he was, earning stake-money for his owner), well, to be a good racing Greyhound, you have to do the work, which means walking and running to build up strength and better ability.

And me, with my Chronic Illness of Multiple Sclerosis, well, keeping active and mobile means I will be better able to keep on being active and mobile! If I’m going to be standing up and reading my poetry to others, I need to train myself to speak my words, but I also need to be mobile to get to where I will be presenting my work/words!

Body and mind working together, being better at the first, helps me to be better at the second! ***** Something to report on, in relation to that ‘active and mobile’ thing … I’ve had a trip and crashed down to the ground … Ouch!

Not my best look! ‘writer’s photo’

So there’s been a lot more thinking going on the past few days, and not much ‘mobility’ happening. I’ve been writing online, on Medium, and talked about the accident here: so it sure isn’t a good look, but it is nowhere near as painful as my thumb, my left thumb, which was sprained, as talked about in that article on medium

And because I had that fall, and time waiting at the local hospital, I’m feeling disconnected in some part, from what I’d wanted this post to be about, such is life!

Book Is Becoming More Real!

When I sent off the manuscript to my chosen publisher, I wasn’t sure whether it would be accepted. I wasn’t unsure about the quality of what I’d submitted, but books can be rejected for a variety of reasons, beyond quality if the work/words.

It this new poetry collection was accepted, and the process of the publisher turning my poems and additional material into an actual poetry collection with a cover has begun!

Today that publisher, Gunninderra Press, sent me an image for possible use as the image for the front cover, and my next book is suddenly feeling even more real!

This next poetry collection is going to be my absolute best collection ever, and I feel I could never produce another one, and it wouldn’t matter, this poetry collection is perfection in poetic form! Or perhaps I’m kidding myself?

No, Stephen Matthews from Ginninderra Press likes it, and I trust his judgement, so this book-to-be is a good one! Isn’t as good as I feel it is at the moment? Only time will tell, but I’m happy with how this book looks and reads!

I’ve been working with Stephen a little bit about some of the non poetry bits and pieces of the book today (via email), and in the pit of my tummy, I can feel excitement is beginning to grow!

The actual putting together of the book is still not finished and so it usn’t printed yet, but there is an image for the front cover considered and approved of by me. So it is certainly looking like I will have an actual book to read from at the book launch, and copies to sell too, this is one of my favourite stages of this process, when I see my book being read by others!

The act of writing a poem can feel frustrating at times, trying to find a publisher can feel difficult if not impossible, and marketing, especially with a self-published book is horrid, but book launches are fun and joyous occasions!

So keep working on ‘LEONARD COHEN IS DEAD’ Stephen, so this new book will be ready to be launched at the end of May!

There Are Many Different Kinds Of Writing …

Some of them I’ve had a go at, others don’t interest me, or not at the moment anyway, and others, well there are definitely others I’d love to try, sometime …

I’m nothing special to look at, but my head has many things happening inside of it, interesting things! (writer’s photo)

I wrote a bit about this issue recently, this is the link to it, on Medium.com. I’ve been writing on that online platform since April this year, and while I quite enjoy putting my word out there, at this new (to me) writing place, it isn’t up close and personal presenting my words to a keen audience.

And that idea, of doing ‘a show’ where people are interested enough to buy a ticket, just to see me do something interesting, amusing, exciting, or inspiring, well that idea really appeals to me …

My involvement with using my writing as a connection to others, and expressing myself to them through my writing, as so far been limited to Poetry Readings, and talking to groups about my books, or my life as shown in my books, two in particular. I certainly enjoy doing that, and would enjoy doing a lot more if it, if only I could get my head around the hows of getting such gigs.

But as I haven’t actually done all that much about promoting myself as a writer, that isn’t particularly surprising, is it? If only I had an agent to do the work of spreading my name as a good one to have for an event! It’s a bit of a catch 22 – to get an agent, I’d need to be better known, but if I was better known, I’d have people calling me, to do a show with them!

Anyway, as I set out in the article on Medium.com, I’ve been thinking about the idea of going up on the stage, but realised I probably have enough going on, writing wise at the moment, and there are other possible reasons why living my life as it is now, is probably more than enough.

I have a poetry collection coming out early 2020 “Leonard Cohen Is Dead” to be published by Ginninderra Press. Having been had my poetry published by Ginninderra previously, I am very much looking forward to being able to have this new book launched, and showing the world how my poetic abilities have been getting better and better. I definitely this is my very best poetry collection so far!

So yes, Poetry is my best and most favoured style of writing, but who knows what I may end up doing. There’s still the novel I’m writing, and the idea of being a stand up comic is still hovering around in my head! A sit down/stand up comedian with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), how funny, right?! But that spot was stolen for me by Tim Ferguson, who is much practiced at the comedian thing, having worked with the Doug Anthony All Stars and done great work, and then telling the world about his diagnosis with MS.

And Tim Ferguson has MS much worse than I do, so he gets the sympathy card as well, whereas my MS is cruising along well, and I don’t even look like I’m sick at all, unless you see me at my worst, which hasn’t actually happened for ages. Damn my medication! Haha, just joking. I’m thrilled to have an effective medication, that allows me to live a near ‘normal’ life …

Now, where was I? Um I forget … I think I’ve said enough, and if I remember, I may do an update. The main point is that I’m still doing writing stuff, and enjoying it. And I just remembered what was maybe going to me next, but that will need to be a post on its own, I think, so you’ll have to wait.

Don’t complain, waiting is good for you, and it’s better if you have to wait for it! Or is that your dinner? Something like that. Cheers friends, thank you for reading!
