Fab Feb Writing Prompts – Day Five

As they say in the James Bond movie – Never Say Never!

Actually, feel free to say Never, say the word, and write about it! Today is the day for it, because the word NEVER is the writing prompt for today, the fifth day of February. It’s a trick word, never. We may say, in our earlier lives would never do this or that or the other, in our lives. But we grow up, see things, like things, accept things, and our thoughts  grow, and change, as we get older, living, leaning, losing, lazing about!

As youngsters, we have we may have declared, ‘I’ll never ever do that!’, only to realise, as you’ve aged, you’d be quite happy to do that thing now, because you can see the wisdom of doing that very thing, whatever it is.

For me, my personal most unfavoured food that I now love to eat, is mushrooms. I hadn’t self-declared as a no mushroom eater, when I was a child, as such, I simply never ate them, if and when, they appeared on my dinner plate. Then pizzas came into the world (or at least my pre-teen world) and I discovered that mushrooms are actually quite tasty!

So I went from never eating mushrooms, to eating these tasty and healthy foods quite often. So much for that word, never!

Is there anything you never do, or never have done? Personally, I’ve never bungie jumped. I’m not saying I’ll never done it, and it’s difficult to see any circumstances occuring where I’ll have the opportunity to do it, but who knows, I might well give it a go!

Last year, I certainly learnt a lesson in using that word Never. My mother and I were chatting at our usual Friday catch up, about how neither of us had ever broken a bone, even though there were certainly times when we could have. And then, the next day, what did I do? I fell over and broke my ankle – in fact two bones in my ankle!
(If you want to, you can read more about it here, at another of my blogs.) That blog post, and many of the ones that follow are about my ankle, it was my major focus for the three months that followed. I’m going to be more careful about using this bog word, Never, in the future!

ouch, my poor ankle! But hey, I’m a writer, and I wrote about my ankle, and had a book published with the poems I wrote when I was laid up, with instructions to not put any weight on my right foot! And here it is, my beautiful little book!

If there’s anything you’ve never done, or would never do, are you sure about that? Never vote for ? or never have a ? as a pet? You never really know what might happen, how circumstances might change, and how your knowledge about things may change too, based on further relevant information.

So today’s prompt, is ************** NEVER************

You could write a list poem, containing all of the things you would or wouldn’t ever do.

Or you could write a list of ‘Never Do This’ things, make it sensible, or funny, give examples, save lives or make people giggle, take this any way you want. I would say ‘Never break your ankle!’

Or you could do something else entirely, based on your thoughts about that word, ‘Never’.

A ‘Prompt’ Idea for February

A friend from my main writing group (hi Marie!), gave me an idea that I’m thrilled with, the idea of posting a writing prompt every day in February. So, I’m going to find my little box of writing prompts I’ve put away ‘somewhere safe’.

I think I know where this ‘safe place’ is and very soon, I will look for it, so I will be able to put up a new prompt every day for February. I’m looking forward to this, and will quite likely post my own response every day, if I’m happy with what I’ve written.

So the safe spot wasn’t where I thought it might be, but that doesn’t mean this Prompt a Day creative writing spectacular won’t happen, no way! My mind is abuzz with writing prompts, and I’ll easily find a new one for every day!

Finding something to write about can be a thing that stops new writing at times, but for me, the difficulty is actually dealing with all of the ideas I have. But new prompts leading to new ideas, are always good things, for writers, particularly if they have a possible new book in the offing, as I do, several new books, in fact.

One of those potential books is another poetry collection, which I hope will meet the approval of the publisher I send it to. If that is to happen though, I have to make the collection the best I possibly can, and having a broad range of my own poems to choose from will certainly help.

So I hope February, and the writing prompts I’m going to post (one every day of February), will help both me personally, and other people too, to find poetic and/or creative writing success.

So if you, or anyone you know, wants something that will give creative ideas, why not come and visit every day next month! May February be the month that really brings your writing alive!

Another Day, Another Poem

As I’m going through this month of a poem a day for February (#poemadayfeb), I am pleasantly surprised to see the quality of the poems I’ve produced so far. When you write a new poem every single day, you doin’t have lots and lots of time to fiddle with your poem, it’s a matter of get it written, get it edited, and get it out there!

In the past, I have kept my poems more to myself, holding to the thought, perhaps, that publishers want exclusive rights to my precious poems, so I need to keep them to myself. But I don’t actually send my poem to potential publishers very often anyway, so there’s that idea shot down in flames …

My idea at the moment is that I may see if I can get this month’s worth of poems published in a chapbook, there will be only 28 poems (or possibly more, if I get really keen), and that is a good number of poems for such a publication.

I’m also interested to notice that I have been writing some longer poems for this project. Today’s poem, for instance is 24 lines, and I think yesterday’s poem was that length too. In the past, I have tended to write poems that are between 3 words (haiku), and 12 to 14 lines. That may be because I am also writing a novel at the moment, and thinking about longer word counts, or it may be something else, who knows?

I don’t mind, I’m enjoying what I’m writing, and as long as these good poems keep on happening for the rest of the month, I’m happy! So here is my poem for today, the fifth day of February!

Full Circle

We travel many paths through life –

child, to not child, & then on to adult,

from victim to survivor, maybe, & beyond,

as the road to gaining knowledge, bumps

us onward, with ideas we thought fine

showing to be far from fine, but fake.

So we journey on willingly, toward,

the wisdom maturity may bring to us,

& we realise a truth – wisdom was in us

already, as a child, when we found joy

in every new moment, & new thing  –

seeing, feeling, tasting – sensory sublimity!

& holding to that thought, expanding it,

opening minds to the infinity available,

if we will reach out to touch it, taste it,

Smell, and listen to it, these tasks help us

to begin to see meaning for our journey

embracing all we’ve seen, & been & learned …

Life’s journey can take us far, as far as we’re

willing to go, and though the final destination

is the same for all, our journeys from childhood

to adulthood and beyond, can be amazingly

different – if we hold to our childlike mind

& can experience the glorious possiblities!
