Which Characters Make Their Bed?

I was on another person’s blog earlier today – https://murdochmouse.wordpress.com/ , leaving a comment, and that got me thinking about whether the main character in the novel I’m (supposed to be) writing makes her bed every morning.

And then, what about all of the other characters there, which of them would make the bed every day, I wonder? Could this become a thing to think on for all of my characters? I certainly have ideas about which would make their bed every single morning, no matter what.

Is making the bed a generational thing, a ‘class’ think, a town versus country thing? Or is it a trait of being tidy versus being messy, OCD even, versus just don’t care? These feel like ways to learn more about the characters in my series of Cosy Murder Mysteries, the “At Talloola” series, with amateur sleuth Meredith Webster.

So do you make the bed every morning? We don’t make the bed every morning, even though, yes, it does look a lot neater if it is done. It just doesn’t seem that important. And given the news about those dust mites that will die off if they get exposed to the light, and lose access to moisture in the bedding, if you leave the bed unmade, I guess I’ll likely go on leaving the bed unmade.

Having written that though, I’m now thinking about all of the creatures that will die earlier than they otherwise would have. If I truly cared about all of Natures creatures, surely I’d make the bed, so those dust mites could live long enough to pass on their genes, as all creatures want to do …

Hmm, I feel that is a discussion for another blog, on another day. But this is where I read about the dust mite. making (or not making) the bed: https://coach.nine.com.au/health-issues/making-the-bed/0d58606f-3204-4255-91cb-af313c9d2113

Do you make the bed every day? Should I even care about dust mites? Is making or not making the bed a moral issue? Does it even matter?

I’d love other people’s ideas about these important things.

  1. I find it helps get my day and thoughts in order if I make the bed in the morning, but if I’m in a hurry (as usual) I don’t always do it. Also ‘making’ the bed to me means straightening it out a little: though I do love the way they make beds in hotels I never go to those lengths myself!

  2. Carolyn, I enjoy reading your blogs. You are a wonderful and talented writer. I’m happy I was lead to your site. I do make my bed but not the first thing in the morning. I chalk it up to another little victory that day and it puts me in the right mindset to tackle other challenges. You pose such an interesting question about characters making their beds. I will probably never read another novel without thinking that at some point. Thank you and take care.

  3. When I went out to work each day I didn’t make my bed on those mornings. Sometimes I made it on the weekend. These days I almost always make my bed because it makes my bedroom look so much tidier and more welcoming. I have an ensuite so walk through my bedroom several times a day and I will be in and out of the bedroom putting things away and doing other tasks. I may leave the bed unmade if I have an early appointment and am going to be out all or most of the day.

    1. Thank you for your interesting response, Marie. The idea that you pass through your bedroom often during the day is an interesting one. Our bedroom is up one end of the house, and unless I need to go there yo vhange my clothes for any reason, I have no need to go there, so untidy or not, or doesn’t hit me in the eye, so to speak.

I look forward to hearing more stories from people about this. I especially am i terested in how people might label others, whi do, or don’t make the bed every day.

I think it’s a personal thing, and up to each person whether they do, or don’t.

  4. My great-grandmother made her beds so neatly, she stuck a pin in the middle and straightened all the sides exactly evenly down from there. I’ve never made my children make their beds each morning, although they need to make them at once-a-week room-cleaning. It’s a good thing my great-grandmother died before I had my children.

  6. You method sounds like a good way to go John. Killing off any possible infestation ilof dust mites, with a tidy bef to get into at thec rght time at night. It dounds like an organised method, too, for someone who may have been pushed for time in their working life, perhaps.
