Rainy Day Spring-time Thoughts

Spring-time thoughts you may query. not Fall? But yes Spring-time because I live in Australia, in the Southern hemisphere, where it is Spring here, when it’s Autumn on the other side of the world. Going by the amount of rain we’ve had today, it looks like it could me Autumn, but it’s far too cool for that, it is definitely Spring.

Anyway, that rain means I’m not as keen on heading off to the nearest town, Mallala, where Graham, my husband is playing lawn bowls. I’m sure the players cursed the rain, but the farmers and gardeners, as well as the creatures may all welcome the rain that will bget things growing again.

Although some of the farmers may not be quite so happy with the rain, if they were wanting to harvest, or if they’re cut down crops for hay … I’m pretending I know what I’m talking about there, but even though Graham and I live in a farming area, with paddocks in front and behind u, we’re on a small block not acres and acres of land.

We moved out here from a suburban area, to breed showdogs, which held our interest for a time, then as our sone grew a bit older and began having opinins, he let us know the dog showing was stupid, and we agreed with him, and so when the last of our showdogs died, we got ourselves a Greyhound., Lenny.

While Lenny is a handsome creature, running fast is what he was bred for, not prancing around looking pretty, And when he’d finished his racing career and his owner had to let him go, we were lucky to find him online and so became Greyhound owners and discovered the various quirky habits of this ancient breed.

Lenny is a dog, sure, but he’s a particular kind of dog, a Greyhound, and he has some habits unlike any other dog I’ve known, and I’ve known a good few dogs. I’ve written about that elsewhere, and may write a piece about such things here at some stage, but now now. Instead I’m going to finished

I began writing a little poem, and I quite like it. Then I almost finished it off, Still liked it, but it needed more. So I polished it up a bit more, tweaking this and that, ad here it is:

Why? Because He’s A Greyhound!

Lenny surprises us, irritates is and more
With our funny black dog we wonder, what’s next in store?
Woof woof he barked, like something was wrong
I couldn’t find a thing, but his worrying was strong
I checked out some more, was this the trouble?
He wanted more food – Quick march, on the double!

This is Lenny, who is yet again lying in the exact same position as in this photo. He’s right next to me, we’re sharing the sofa as we do so many times when I’m doing things on my laptop, and he’s resting to get over his hard day of doing almost nothing.

Once upon a time, Lenny was a racing Greyhound, named Lenny The Jet, now he’s Lenny the sofa hog, or lounge lizard or such things. He is our reason for going for walks into the morning though, that is a good thing for all of us!

Let me know what you think about the poem, about Lenny, or about well, anything really. Having a dog? Writing? Poetry? Walking? Birdsong as an inspiration? You can’t hear it, but there’s a Blackbird outside singing so sweetly, I could write about that.

I’d rather write about native birds, not the Blackbird that is an introduced species, although they’ve been in Australia for many, many years. They do have annoying habits, but that beautiful call they have makes up for the damage they sometimes cause by digging up plants and other things.

I’m very fond of the many different species of birds that live in and around our one and three quarter acres of land! And I’m always thrilled when I see one particular kind of bird bringing up a new family i n a nest they’ve built just right nest to our house.

That bird is the Willie Wagtail, a unique native Australian bird, a bit bigger than a Sparrow, mostly black but with some white and with a long tail that it does in fact almost wag!

And now the rain seems to have stopped, so I’m going to get my shoes on and head off to watch some lawn bowls.

Goodbye!
